A view of an almost complete Samian ware bowl found at Horton. It was made in Central Gaul during the 2nd century AD. The bowl was made in a mould and covered in red slip to give it its distictive colour. Archaeologists are particularly fond of Samian ware as the decorations rapidly went in and out of fashion, enabling the pots to be dated by their style. You can read more about the Horton dig at Wessex Archaeology.
